Trip Report - December 2023

In December 2023 I took a solo trip to stay over Christmas, I stayed at a nearby apartment style hotel, Adagio Serris, travelled by Eurostar, met up with some friends and had a very festive time!

Trip Report Day One

Travel Day - 23rd December 2023

Travelled from North Yorkshire with my first train of the day at 5.48am! Arm ached from dragging the case from my house but apart from that uk trains very smooth and all assistance as it should be. Staff were waiting at every station, ramps were put down and they helped with my case, all this was booked through the passenger assistance app.

Got to London a bit early so had a nosy round the tree at Kings Cross then headed over to St Pancras. Decided not to attempt to get into the spoons for breakfast as it was so busy and it’s just awkward to manoeuvre with my chair, attachment and case! So just hung around and then checked in. I do often use this Wetherspoons and it does have tables at the back, at the front it all appears to be high tables and stools, and it does also have an accessible toilet.

Eurostar was quieter than I expected, the regular queues were almost non existent but the waiting room was a little busy. Headed to the lounge for a coffee and chilled there until I headed to the train. Got on no problem and then sat with a lovely couple and chatted all the way. The husband was using a mobility scooter and they also needed to use the RER so after we got off we headed over there together.

I always use the RER but there have more issues than not while there is work going on in that area, and today the biggest issue was trying to actually find any sort of assistance, plus a broken lift, in the end, over an hour after arriving and with the woman I met speaking fluent French we eventually had someone and I was on the way at the time I had hoped to be at the hotel by! They did suggest we could have asked in the main station for the assistance for the RER as it is all provided by SNCF, but we had already passed through the barriers into the RER part before we realised that where there used to be a manned assistance point was now a construction fence! They also weren’t sure if the ramp would be at Val d’Europe as they couldn’t reach them but at this point I didn’t care! I can’t get my chair onto the trains with my attachment on but I can bump it off so I just went, and actually someone was there. I had of course taken so long my RER ticket was no longer valid to let me out, so a guy just held them open for me to sort of barge through, a bit naughty but I was fed up at this point.

I headed to the hotel through the shopping centre which was very busy, so there was a pre test of managing Disney crowds! Got to hotel and they said there was no note on the booking about an accessible room (I had added this) and they didn’t have one but could swap me to one in the morning, did I mention I was tired at this point! I said ok and went to the room (and it’s hard to explain how awkward dragging a case in and out of lifts and round corners is with a chair which is harder to manoeuvre because of the attachment!) and the key didn’t work. Went back to reception and I think she thought it was me as she came with me and also realised it didn’t work! She let me in the room, then went to get the key sorted and honestly I had a little cry! She came back with the key, but said she could move me now so she went off to get the new room key and came back to help with my stuff, then asked if I needed any help ordering any food or anything, so she was very helpful in the end, and I got an accessible room but it’s an upgrade on what I paid for. It’s even a room I’ve stayed in before.

Anyway now I was sorted I just ordered groceries through Uber eats, waited for those to arrive, unpacked, ate bread and cheese, drank some wine and started making up the pixie dust which due to suitcase space needed putting together, that took way longer than anticipated and had to be finished this morning! Then I fell into bed and now it’s a very late start for my first day in the parks today!

Trip Report Day Two

First Park Day - 24th December 2023

No alarm set and I woke up about 8.30 and started pottering! Made a coffee (this hotel has a full kitchenette) and finished assembling pixie dust, just like that an hour had passed so another coffee and to start actually getting ready! Loaded up the chair, made up a flask of hot chocolate (which was still warm when I finished it off nearly 12 hours later!) and eventually set off just after 11am. The hotel does have a free shuttle but I walked and was through security by 11.22.

I went to the main park to see the tree and had a bit of a wander but I was feeling a bit aimless to be honest. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do so wandered to fantasyland, then parked up and ate a biscuit, checked the app and decided to go over to studios to watch Together as I’ve only seen it once and enjoyed it.

Got over to studios and bumped into an Instagram friend who I’ll hopefully see more of, they were on their way to dream factory so a quick hello then got in queue for Together. Gave out more pixie dust to some people in the queue, one stopped me after to say thank you and that they had had a look at my website and thought it was something helpful so that was nice to hear.

I really enjoyed together and some ladies sat next to me were so enthusiastic it really boosted me too, they also got pixie dust! I was dancing along by the end!

I then went back to the main park, met up with a lovely lady from Facebook and exchanged Pixie Dust then headed to fantasyland again as I had an Auberge de Cendrillon reservation. I had nearly cancelled several times as I have done it quite a few times but was glad I hadn’t as I was just cold and still a bit not sure what to do so it worked well! I got Cinderella and Suzy and Perla, who are my favourites and the main reason I go, then Merida, Aurora and Snow White. Had some lovely chats and learnt Gus has been hiding cheese everywhere instead of putting up decorations and honestly that sounded way better. I also gave some pixie dust activity type bags to some little boys at the next table and they seemed to really enjoy the stickers/card making stuff and the parents were lovely so that made me feel better too!

After that I went shopping for my niece and picked up some frozen items and she is finally big enough for the dress up shoes, not sure if that’s a good thing or not! Then I went to get Champagne and a spot for the Christmas parade. The stand was new today and the glasses seem new, similar to the recent 100 ones that sold out in shape but just a generic Disneyland Paris design. The woman looked concerned about me carrying it until I whipped out my trusty silicone lid!

I went to the priority area for the parade and there was some lovely cast members interacting with the crowds. I was going to take pictures but they were coming out terrible so I just put phone down and enjoyed it.

After the parade I headed over the the studios and it was now very quiet since the French really celebrate on Christmas Eve evening. I randomly checked the app and could meet an avenger immediately so booked that and went over, I got Sam Wilson who quizzed me about his history but I passed! He was lovely, as were the cast members so more pixie dust and then another one handed to the cast member on the desk as I was exiting. He then asked if I wanted to see Spiderman too as it was quiet and about to close so why not! He was also a good meet, we discussed how Dr Strange shouldn’t really have tried to help him!

It was now about 7pm and I hadn’t done any rides so went on web slingers and was happy with my score, but will try again tomorrow, my arms were aching by this time of day! I then went over and rode RC racer, always more thrilling than it looks! When I got of the ride my attachment which I’d left was upside down and the handlebars were loose and a clip undone so not sure if it just fell (it has been windy) or of someone got inquisitive, but it did make me a bit nervous. I was also feeling really tired even though I felt like I’d done very little! I decided to grab some pizza from Stark and then call it a night as I had wanted to see the marvel show but I could tell it would be too windy for the drones anyway.

So that was it and back to the hotel, to get into pj’s, have a tidy up, find some cream for my blistered thumbs (I don’t get blistered feet so suppose this is only fair!) and try to be more prepped for tomorrow as I really want to try and meet chip and dale so could do with a much earlier start!

*also several people told me about the new collector cards being given out, I said I wasn’t going to try because if I get one I’ll need the set and it will annoy me, and then I pixie dusted a custodian and he gave me two so now I also need to try and get the other two now!

Trip Report Day Three

Christmas Day - 25th December 2023

I wanted to be up early, I prepped as much as possible and I failed! I woke up later than I hoped and started pottering. I had bought stuff to make breakfast and debated not bothering and just eating biscuits but I thought I’d be good, however it took forever! No toaster so I had to work out how to use the grill setting on the microwave then it took ages to work out the hob and only the middle heated up so it was the slowest cooked eggs ever, however I made some bucks fizz so that helped. Once I was eventually ready I set off and got to the park around 11am, way too late for Chip and Dale which had been my initial plan.

I went and sorted my annual photopass out as the one I’d been using had expired and I had some temporary cards from hero training centre, that was sorted quickly and the cast member gave me some stickers which was nice.

It was definitely noticeably busier today than yesterday. I headed over to Buzz Lightyear and joined the queue. This took around 20 minutes, but when I went back later, I was the only one in the queue. I decided to transfer to the ride, which was fine and I was really happy with my score, but when I got off a stranger decided to assist and they grabbed my arm and were trying to pull me up to help me get off the ride, even though I tried to say no. I was shocked and I know they were trying to help but it didn’t help and was really unsettling. Mostly however people have asked and I will either accept or not, for example cast members ask if I want them to push me, I say no and we are good, someone asks if they can get the door I’m thrilled and happily accept, asking is key!

After Buzz, I decided to go on it’s a small world, and this time just stayed in my chair as no one else was waiting for the accessible boat! I had a lovely ride and straight after joined the queue for princess pavilion, the cast member said the queue would be around 45 minutes and I timed it and it ended up around 35 minutes. When I did get in I met Snow White, who was lovely as always.

I was now getting peckish and had cancelled my Walts reservation as I’m not that keen on the vegetarian option so instead, I headed to Casa de Coco for my favourite burrito. I really like the vegan burrito here and of course I had to add a margarita, it is Christmas after all. I had been worried about the queues as I had seen very long ones at Bella Notte but here I used the accessible lane and it was very quick.

After eating, I decided to head to let’s sing Christmas, and I got there quite early, which was good as the queues quickly grew. I think this is a lovely show and really get to you in the festive spirit. Donald and Daisy were super cute with Daisy getting mad at Donald for not proposing!

I then went to ride on Star Tours. This is not a ride I particularly enjoy especially as I’m not really a Star Wars fan however, it’s not too hard to get on and doesn’t take up too much energy so it felt worthwhile and I was able to get some pictures I needed for my website. I then wanted to ride Buzz again, however, it was temporarily down so instead, I fought through the Christmas parade crowds to get to fantasyland. I went on Dumbo, which is always lovely and then headed over to Snow White, which I don’t mind, but it’s probably not worth the effort and it is quite scary and dark for younger visitors.

When I got off Buzz was open again, so I started heading that way, stopping to give someone some directions because I am the map! This time when I got to buzz, there was no one in the queue and I used the wheelchair accessible vehicle to avoid a repeat of the earlier incident, this time however I did not score as well!

I then headed over to the studios, and I was feeling peckish, and I really fancied a buckwheat galette, this was probably the longest queue of the day! I I had the goat cheese, walnut and rocket one, and they add honey to the outside once it’s done so this was a very messy thing to eat. To reward myself after managing this, I got myself a mulled wine and endured the classic joke about drink driving!

I had planned to do some rides in the studios and maybe even stay for the avengers show but by now I was done. I was tired, achy and I just needed to get back to the hotel so I left, went back to the hotel got in my pyjamas and crawled into bed. There may have been some extra steps, including 15 minutes fighting to get out of my dress, but will skip that and just end with me comfy back at the hotel.

Today wasn’t perfect. Yes, it was lovely to be in Disney at Christmas but often I just felt guilty that the staff were having to work. It doesn’t matter how festive something is when you are tired and things are just harder than at home. I also don’t think there is much difference between being at Disney over actual Christmas or just as part of the Christmas season. I only came over Christmas due to annual leave requirements but I don’t think I’d come again over actual Christmas Day. Today was busy. The parks felt busy and sometimes the crowds seemed really bad. However, overall the ride queue times were not that bad so it is manageable. I do still have one full day left tomorrow but not holding out hope for getting in with my annual pass on my last day!

Trip Report Day Four

Boxing Day - 26th December 2023

I finally made it to the parks at a reasonable time! Just after 9am! I had a wander and watched chip and dale for a bit then headed over to Plaza gardens for character breakfast. This isn’t something I’ve done in ages but I was meeting up with some friends and as Donald and Daisy had been appearing at breakfast recently I was there just hoping for them!

We arrived and my friend also uses a walker so we headed to the accessible ramped entrance at the back, some other people there were asking/were also confused if this entrance was for all priority pass holders or just for those needing step free access but honestly I didn’t know, but they were fine going in that way and we went in, paid and got our table. We had done two bookings and asked to be nearby but they were able to seat us all on one table which was lovely. We had a Daisy plush and we joked about her needing her own high chair, this became important later!

We met Tigger, Eeyore, Goofy, Pluto, Donald and Daisy and I was happy with that! The food was also pretty good and I had a very full plate, including some quite nice plant based sausages. After a round of savoury I then also had a plate of waffles and pancakes, it is Christmas after all! I added Daisy’s signature to my wheels and Donald signed the one he hadn’t signed before!

After breakfast we decided to continue with characters and headed to princess pavilion where we got lucky and got Belle, so another new addition to the signatures in my wheels! We pixie dusted her and the cast member and photographer and they were so sweet, they had been working yesterday too.

We knew we wanted to see the princess happening at 2.45pm but still had some time to kill so headed to Frontierland and rode big thunder mountain. Had a slightly bizarre experience where a woman was almost trying to climb over me while I was waiting for my chair to get off the ride, it’s not like it was going to leave with her not seated!

We then rode phantom manor, all good except for people in front who decided to use phone torches! Please just don’t!

We were still early for the princess show but decided to get a spot anyway and have a chat while waiting, so we got there probably nearly 90 minutes before! We did have a great front row spot, and we defended it well, though not without a few comments! I do usually use priority pass areas but we wanted to be more central and had got there early to get that spot but two different lots of people made comments about how we should be in the priority area. As it got closer people near us were also trying to hold their ground while people started pushing and inevitably the point came when some parents started pushing their kids in between people who had been waiting almost as long as us. The kids themselves even seemed reluctant to do this. Another adult was loudly stating that adults shouldn’t be allowed at the front. The show was lovely and then after some dancing the princesses do come down and chat to some people, my friend was bounding as Tiana so she had come over and was chatting and a small girl started trying to push through the tiniest gap between my wheelchair and my friends walker, encouraged by an adult she was with, it was again just so bizarre that people think this is acceptable! We were trying to allow a girl who had been waiting ages just behind us to be in a spot to see over my shoulders but she got pushed back and almost trampled on.

However after that chaos we headed to studios as had booked a hero training center spot. We arrived and we got Shuri, who I had not before so was thrilled! She was a good meet and after that we headed to my favourite bathroom then as that’s so close by I rode Tower of Terror. We then had to rush over to the Disneyland Park to meet a friend of my friends as we had earlier spotted that a train was running on the railroad that hadn’t been seen in a very long time, two run at once but we were lucky and as we arrived this specific one was there unloading and we just made it on to it for a quick ride round the park, including a wave at a dancing Jack Sparrow as we passed him!

We then rushed back to studios to catch a showing of Mickey and the Magician and your annual passes get confused if you park hop really quickly so that took a little bit to get though but we made it to the show in time! I love this show and it’s definitely worth watching! We then still had a bit of time before they wanted to see the Christmas parade and I had a dinner reservation so one last ride for the day and we went on Web-Slingers. I’m super competitive at this and usually average a decent score but of course with other people I did way worse than usual, though as a team we did make it onto the scoreboard!

After this I said goodbye and headed over to Hotel New York, I was still a bit early and my battery was looking lower than I’d like so I went and sat in the Bleeker Street Lounge which is open for use in the evenings and there was plugs by seating so I got in a quick charge. I then headed over for dinner at Manhattan which is probably my favourite Disney restaurant. Initially they removed a chair so I could sit at the table in my chair but I was right at the back and facing a wall which wasn’t the vibe I was going for so I transferred to the opposite seat and could see the restaurant, decorations and people watch better! I love the food here and it was just as good as usual, though the waiter was struggling with understanding the word mushrooms so if I’d had an allergy (rather than a dislike) I would have probably asked for someone else to confirm the order. It was however fine and no mushrooms in my pasta! I had it with the wine pairings which were nice, and it came to around €67 with my annual pass discount.

Full up I had one last stop to make! I can’t go for dinner at Hotel New York without a visit to the skyline bar! I love this place and the cocktails are great, though as I’d had some wine with dinner I decided to just have one. I have been quite a few times so have tried most on the normal menu and like to try the specials they often have, though these were €25 and are presented in a mystic box! However the waiter did say the one I was looking at was nice so I went for it! It felt ridiculous and it was over the top and cheesy but it did make me laugh when it came out and it was actually a really nice cocktail! I had the Kamar-Taj which had hints of matcha but was quite fruity and had a kiwi flavour.

Then a French family came in with a little girl with a giant stitch and sat nearby, the waiter gave the giant stitch a high chair, menu and straw and it was so cute but we’d joked about similar earlier so I went and asked if I could take a picture (obviously without the child in) and that was fine so I offered the girl a pixie dust bag and had some mini versions so I also gave one of those to stitch! She was very sweet and came over to say thank you. I sent the pic to my friend and then I asked for the bill but the waiter came back and the family had paid for my drink, which was very sweet of them, and I felt a bit bad for having had the most expensive cocktail!

All that was left was to get back to hotel and pack, and I really didn’t fancy trying to get through security and unclip/take off my bags as it’s doable just a bit awkward, so instead I cut round the side of Sequoia and through the car park and learnt that the car park barriers will recognize me as a vehicle and open! I then took the slighter longer route back but it had saved me security so was worth it. Got back, tried to pack a bit, wrote a bit of this, and then bed! It’s now morning and I’m finishing this up while still hoping to make it to the parks in good time but dreading the whole dragging the case all the way there part!

Trip Report Day Five

Last day and travel home - 27th December 2023

I had booked a privilege ticket for this day but was also on the waiting list with my annual pass and luckily got in on the wait list, despite the parks being full.

I really wanted to try and meet chip and dale so I knew I needed to be up early but I also need to finish packing, check out and drop my bag somewhere, I was aiming for the lockers at the train station and had some cash ready for that! I did get up but everything takes longer than I think and after dragging my case all the way to the village and then getting it and all the bags attached to my chair through security I couldn’t face the extra steps of exiting to the train station and coming back in again and having to take it all off again so I just used the luggage storage at the parks and for one cabin case only it was worth the €8! The queue for left luggage was massive so I felt guilty that they had an accessible queue too so I gave some pixie dust to the people I ended up pushing in front of! Then the queues to get in were massive too but were fine for the accessible entrance.

I made it into the parks at around 10 and went straight for Chip and Dale and got maybe the second to last slot, then went back to try for Winnie the Pooh as he was one I also really wanted but Chip and Dale were the priority! Pooh is also out for longer so I did also manage to get a slot for him and both were for early afternoon. That was really the main thing I had wanted to do that day, anything else was now a bonus! I had been so tempted to stay in bed longer so I was now glad I had dragged myself up and out!

I then went and met up with some friends again and they had booked hero training centre so I headed over with them, happy to sit it out but the cast member did let me in too. We met Natasha who was a really great meet, really fun and interactive. We were now hungry and I had been wanting the vegan shawarma for super diner all week and I wasn’t the only one so we headed there. Wheelchair access is at the far side of it and you do into a back door but they do have a half booth with movable stools there reserved for such access requirements as otherwise it’s quite a tight squeeze inside and all booths or the counter. They come and take your order, you pay them at the same time and then the food is delivered to you, or you can get it to take out. I really enjoyed the food here, but it’s a very limited menu of either shawarma (vegan or meat) or a chicken ceaser salad, so may not be for everyone!

After food we headed back to the Disneyland Park, for our meets with Chip and Dale and Pooh. Chip and Dale were exactly what I’d hoped for, funny and cheeky, they were initially upset they weren’t on my wheels until I showed them they were on my bag and then they were fine. They were both claiming each other was on the naughty list and hadn’t got any presents, and they each adopted one of my friends so I claimed I needed to have them both! Straight after that we headed to Winnie the Pooh and he told us he had got a very large pot of honey for Christmas but had eaten it all already! He gives great hugs so we had a fantastic half hour!

My friends stopped to say hi to a friend of theirs who was working at city hall, please be kind to cast members, then we decided we were on a roll with characters so went to princess pavilion. The entrance to the accessible queue was chaotic as there was a massive group where it wasn’t clear if they were in the queue or just standing there having come off small world, this may have put people off joining as we went to look closer and they weren’t in the queue and there was only about 3 groups in the queue so that was the shortest pavilion queue I’d been in in a very long time! Still took a while but when we got in we met Cinderella, who was as lovely as ever.

After this we wanted a snack so we were heading to Victoria's but looking at the time we stopped briefly to see the princess come out to head to the castle stage. Once they had passed we went and joined the queue for Victoria's. I don’t know if we could have shown our priority passes but we didn’t as we had seats so we waited. It was a slow moving queue but we didn’t have any other plans. Once we got to the front we were shows to a larger table that had plenty of space for both my chair and my friends walker, it had been empty while we had been waiting and we had heard someone else in the queue asking why there was an empty table and they hadn’t seated anyone there but it is there to be a more accessible table, which it was, so much easier than trying to squish and then be in other peoples way too.

The cake was to share but I wanted to try it so got it anyway and managed about 3/4! It was light and citrusy so was quite easy to eat. My friends had the cute Mickey waffle!

Despite having just eaten we decided now was the time to try one ride for the day, and that ride was hyperspace mountain! I do this ride with my eyes closed as otherwise I get so lotion sick but I enjoy the sensation even with my eyes closed and luckily none of us felt too ill after, despite having just eaten! This is such a hard ride to get back out of though so both me and my friend struggled, the cast member helped though. Then as we were in the area we went to see Mickeys Philharmagique mostly as it’s one of those things I barely ever go to see and they hadn’t seen in Disneyland Paris. It’s fine! It’s indoors and not a long wait so it fills a bit of time but it’s not something I’d try to fit into a full park day! Saying that it is another option that doesn’t require transferring out of a wheelchair so that’s a bonus.

It was now nearing the time to think about leaving, initially my friends wanted to try and catch the Christmas parade but everywhere was rammed so we just went for food instead. Got to cowboy cookout and were too late as it had just closed, so went to lucky nugget instead. This was nice, quite quiet, you order on entering then are seated then they bring it to you, on plates with proper cutlery! There is a lot of bench seating, then some tables that they usually keep reserved for larger groups/families, but there are a couple of accessible tables near the entrance and they recently added a platform lift in to give access to more tables, though that was largely blocked by chairs and a Christmas tree! But we had a table and it’s also good that here has a separate accessible toilet which is rare in the parks. The veggie burger here was also nicer than the one that you can get at a lot of quick service places, mostly as it had a nicer bun!

And then it was time to leave! I have been leaving I caressingly early for the train but had tried to leave at a reasonable time though I was nervous about this. Went to put my attachment back in my chair and it wasn’t having it to have to break out the torque key and make some adjustments which added to the stress a little, but then we were off, no queue at guest luggage storage and even the station was quite straightforward, a little wait to get to the service desk but then the staff member said he would phone through and someone would meet us in the platform, this was sooo much easier than the journey from Gare du Nord!

Trains all ran as they should and assistance took us out of the RER part using a quick route with a nice large lift, then up to Eurostar. Bit of a wait while they confirmed the ramp (that I booked, emailed back and forth 5 times about, and had a wheelchair space booked but they still needed to check again!) and then to get through. It was mega busy, the queues were massive and though we were brought forward and through there was points where I just physically couldn’t my get through the number of people but we made it. An assistance person then took off with my case so I had to follow so missed the tax refund machines which was a little annoying, but we went straight to board. The train was then delayed half an hour while they got everyone through!

The delay meant it was a little tighter than I would have liked getting from St Pancras to Victoria coach station but this tube journey is an easy step free access to train one, all lifts were working and I have done it before so know the route and lift locations so it was very smooth, if only the RER had step free to train access! Made it to Victoria with a few minutes to spare and the coach driver found me almost straight away and took me out to get all loaded and sorted before everyone else started boarding. Honestly apart from the time it takes and the faff of taking everything off the chair using national express is really easy and I have never had a bad experience. 6 hours later I was in Leeds and the new driver took all my stuff off before I got off so it was ready, and then a quick walk over to the train station where at the last hurdle the train was cancelled! Luckily only about half an hour for another so treated myself to a coffee and I have now eventually made it home! And now I’m going for a nap!
